Bugeye
From Monkey Island wiki
Bugeye appears in Tales of Monkey Island as the de facto leader of the Democratically United Brotherhood of the Manatee Interior, and serves as one of the primary antagonists in "Lair of the Leviathan". It was he who decided to hide the giant manatee's cochlea to ensure it would never reach the ancient Manatee Mating Grounds, as well as making sure Coronado De Cava, his old captain, would never realize his crew was still alive, well, and partying in the stomach of the manatee.
Guybrush Threepwood finally manages to force Bugeye to let him into the group by defeating him in a game of "pirate face-off", Bugeye being its self-proclaimed master. Guybrush eventually sells out the Brotherhood, leading to the imprisonment of Bugeye and the others, but De Cava releases them when he begins to see Guybrush as a larger threat. Bugeye and the rest of the crew are re-swallowed by the manatee when Guybrush shoots a giant seahorse's head at the ship.
Bugeye returns in the final episode playing darts with W.P. Grindstump at Club 41, using Guybrush's corpse to hold the dartboard. When Guybrush repossesses his body, becoming a zombie, Bugeye attacks him (forcing Guybrush's spirit out of his body) unless Guybrush surrenders. In jail, Guybrush finds Bugeye's diary in the cell that he ends up in, and finds out that Bugeye escaped the manatee while it was kissing another manatee, and then rode a Vaycaylian to safety. A brief dispossession later, Guybrush uses that info, along with the "Stinky tweaking meanie" expression he copies from Bugeye, to anger him and make him inadvertently punch W.P., who sends him to jail. After Guybrush manages to repossess his body for the third time, this time using the root beer-flavored Spirit Gum he has made, he escapes from jail, leaving Bugeye alone and pleading for Guybrush to get out.
Bugeye is last seen on his own ship that is accompanied by the Vaycaylians and the Screaming Narwhal (piloted by Reginald Van Winslow, who has found the map and regained control of it) in a battle with LeChuck's ship, though what happens to Bugeye after that is unknown.

Personality
Bugeye is irritable and stubborn, and refuses to let Guybrush in the group. He spends his time punching a uvula-like object inside the manatee's stomach, and continuing Fisheyes Alabaster's "noble work" by doing absolutely nothing. While Bugeye is not truly a villain—his only motive is to have a relaxed and carefree lifestyle—he can easily be classified as an antagonist due to his actions and deception against Guybrush. Bugeye shows his true colours when he is imprisoned and interrogated by Guybrush, cowering with fright at the slightest idle threat, and telling Guybrush whatever he wants to know. De Cava's file on Bugeye describes him as a "bit of a fussbudget", while Guybrush calls him a "stick-in-the-mud" after interrogation. Later, when Bugeye is in jail, he has the tendency to get annoyed whenever Guybrush makes a noise as a zombie (especially when he bangs on the jail bars with the mug he has found).
Guybrush finds Noogie's grave, the inscription of which implies that Bugeye and Moose murdered him after he betrayed them to Guybrush.
Etymology
Bugeye is named after his ultimate pirate face, in which he sucks one eyeball into its socket and pops it out his mouth. No one has ever matched or defeated it until Guybrush is accidentally overcome by the Pox of LeChuck during their pirate face-off.
Trivia
- In the PS3 version of "Lair of the Leviathan", if Guybrush uses every facial expression he learns from Bugeye, Morgan LeFlay, and other people and items in the Pirate Face-Off, the player is rewarded the "I'm So Faced" bronze trophy in the "PlayStation Network Trophy Achievements". If he gets Bugeye and the other members to join him by a unanimous vote, the reward is the "There Is a Brotherhood of Jerks" silver trophy, and if Guybrush manages to defeat them and Coronado De Cava near the end of the chapter, the reward is the "Feed the Beast" gold trophy.
