Role in Games
The Secret of Monkey Island
In The Secret of Monkey Island she appears as the final opponent of Guybrush Threepwood in his swordfighting task. She is an old acquaintance of the Storekeeper's and Captain Smirk's. She uses her own insults and is quick enough to be the first to insult every time, but the same responses used against standard insults can be used against her too. When Guybrush defeats her she gives him a T-shirt that states his victory as proof.
Later in the game she agrees to join Guybrush's crew to save Governor Elaine Marley from LeChuck. After realising Guybrush only has a crew of three (herself, Otis and Meathook) as well as a crummy ship (the Sea Monkey), however, she joins her fellow crewmen in mutiny, becoming utterly useless. Though Guybrush gets his ship to Monkey Island his crew still refuse to budge from their deckchairs.
Carla's eventual fate, along with those of her fellow crewmates, depends on Guybrish's actions on Monkey Island. On a high mountaintop Guybrush finds a primitive rock catapult, which can be adjusted to fire a boulder which will sink the Sea Monkey. If this happens, Carla, Otis and Meathook finish the game marooned on Monkey Island, trapped in the Cannibals' hut, while Guybrush escapes with Herman Toothrot. If Guybrush does not accidentally sink the Sea Monkey, the crew eventually show up on Monkey Island because they've run out of sunscreen, where they take Guybrush and Bob back to Mêlée Island.
Escape from Monkey Island
Escape from Monkey Island chose to make the first version of the above events canon, and by the start of the fourth game Carla and her companions have finally managed to escape from Monkey Island. Carla returns to Mêlée but is defeated by Ozzie Mandrill in an insult swordfight and becomes homeless, insult swordfighting people for food. Against her better judgement she and Otis once more join Guybrush's crew to escort him to Lucre Island and Jambalaya Island, for the promise of cushy Government Jobs. Guybrush does not initially recognise her, mistaking her and Otis for the comedy duo Yongler and Muntz or the band Keelhaul.
After joining Guybrush's crew Carla does not play a significant role in events. On Lucre Island she stays and guards the ship, and on Jambalaya Island she gets drunk at the Micro-Groggery. She is not seen again after Act II.
- Carla's mugshot from the first game was based on Carla Green, who was head of Lucas Games Product Support.
- In 2009, during the monthly break between the end of "Launch of the Screaming Narwhal" and the release of "The Siege of Spinner Cay" from Tales of Monkey Island, the female voice at the end that threatened Guybrush at swordpoint was believed to belong to Carla by some fans. This was soon proven wrong, however, as the voice was revealed to belong to a new character, Morgan LeFlay.
