From Monkey Island wiki
Chieftain Beluga, commonly referred to as the MerLeader, appears in Tales of Monkey Island's second episode, "The Siege of Spinner Cay". Beluga is the royal leader of the Vaycaylians in Spinner Cay, first seen arguing with Elaine Marley and Captain McGillicutty about the rightful ownership of the Summoning Artifacts that will lead to La Esponja Grande. The MerLeader is later kidnapped by McGillicutty and rescued by Guybrush. The MerLeader plays little part in the plot other than combining the Summoning Artifacts after Guybrush has collected them all.
"Beluga" is the name of an Arctic whale and a fish in the sturgeon family whose roe is sold as caviar, as well as the name of a community in Alaska and a class of Russian submarine.
- In "The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood", there is a provocative painting of the MerLeader hanging above W.P. Grindstump in Club 41; this painting is most likely a spoof on the classic 1636 painting Danaë by Dutch artist Rembrandt.
- In the PS3 version, Guybrush can show all the bait items to the MerLeader, including the oyster prior to its being opened up and releasing a pearl, in order to earn the player the "Meals Fit for a King... Queen... Whatever" bronze trophy in the "PlayStation Network Trophy Achievements". Later on, if he manages to sink McGillicutty's ship and rescue the MerLeader, the reward is a "Mighty Merperson Rescuer" silver trophy; and afterward, if Guybrush can ask him/her what the Secret of Monkey Island is, the reward is a "Nice Try" bronze trophy.
