Otis
From MIwiki
Otis is a supporting character who appears in the first and fourth games. When introduced in the first game he is a pirate imprisoned by the Sheriff of Mêlée Island, Fester Shinetop, for allegedly picking exotic flowers. This penchant for botanical thievery is a recurring theme with Otis despite his insistence that it is merely a plot to make him seem less threatening and blood-thirsty.When the player first meets Otis he suffers from a bad case of halitosis and the player can't talk to him until Guybrush gives him a breath mint. Guybrush must later exchange a Gopher-repellent for a cake (with a file in it) in order to complete one of his three trials.
Eventually the player has to free Otis by melting his cell-lock with grog. In turn Otis joins Guybrush's crew on the pretence of saving Elaine while he later admits that he is only after gold. While sailing he and the rest of Guybrush's crew revolt and start lazying around not being much help. While on Monkey Island Guybrush accidentally sinks the Sea Monkey stranding his crew on Monkey Island until they eventually escape and make their way back to Mêlée by the fourth game.
Otis later attempts to resume his former occupation as a petty thief. Unfortunately according to him the indignities he suffered on Monkey Island have left him so jittery that he "can't pick a lock or a pocket without making more noise than a flatulent hippo". Guybrush eventually coaxes him and Carla to once more join his crew in order to sail to Lucre Island. Beyond this Otis serves no purpose, only providing a source for comic dialogue, which is not very dissimilar to his role in the first game. He is not seen again after Act II.
Otis' appearance changes very little between the two games: he wears a white blouse, knee-long pants and black shoes in both of his appearances. However, in the first game he also donned a noticible purple bandanna. In MI4 his hair colour is changed from black to carrot-orange for unspecified reasons. Also, while in the first game he appeared to speak perfect English he has a noticeable, puzzlingly Mexican sounding accent in the fourth game.
