Talk:Elaine Marley
From MIwiki
Elaine - British or not?
As the intro to this article puts it, Elaine Marley-Threepwood is the English primary female-lead/damsel-in-distress in the Monkey Island series, but do we know if she, or the Marley family generally, are English? I don't think just using the voice actors as a guide is enough of an indication, as the accent changed between the third and fourth game. Also Horatio Marley doesn't have much in the way of an English accent either.Ryback 19:05, 16 January 2008 (EST)
But looking at the context if she was governor of a Caribbean island it makes sense that she would be British.--CaptainNiamhy 04:43, 17 January 2008 (EST)
- But it isn't confirmed in any of the games that she is British. The wiki should be based purely on facts. We should never have assumptions or personal opinions in an article and pass it of as facts. Dalixam 06:25, 17 January 2008 (EST)
- There's certainly plenty of clues that she might be from an English background (the upper-class upbringing, the rowing club trophies, etc), but nothing definitive I know of. Since this is going to the front page I think it should be nixed. Ryback 06:33, 17 January 2008 (EST)
- All articles should be treated the same way. Even though an article may possibly at some point be featured as a weekly article does not mean it should be 'better' than others. All articles should be properly done and follow the same rules. The main rule is that all info is objective. Don't write something as a fact without it being established at some point in one of the games. That goes for the 'Bob Marley' line too. Where is this from? It should either go under the 'Trivia' heading or have a footnote pointing to the source of the claim. If something is speculation it should be clearly marked (as 'Governing positions' are). - Indeed all articles should have the same quality control, but that'll take time and if this is is going to be a featured article it should be better than most are currently. As to the Bob Marley thing, it seems to have come from the Wikipedia article on Elaine Marley. It was added by an unregistered IP way back in 2004 as Elaine Marley's name may be a tribute to Bob Marley, then it went to the Trivia section as Elaine Marley's name is almost certainly a reference to Bob Marley, and finally at some point it was taken out of the trivia section (since trivia sections are discouraged in wiki articles), and put into the introduction paragraph as Her name is nearly a reference to Bob Marley. It hasn't ever been sourced that I can see, and a "nearly" reference isn't the same thing as a real reference. I'll remove it from the article.--Ryback 17:41, 17 January 2008 (EST)
- Yeah we should leave the British thing out. Its just speculation. --CaptainNiamhy 12:25, 17 January 2008 (EST)
Okay, I've added a reference for Elaine's appearance and polished the article some more. If no one else has any objections I think it's ready for featured status. The one bit of (unlabeled) fan speculation in the article is that identifying Elaine as romance author Melanie Leary, but I'm comfortable with that since Guybrush is apparently able to recognize the books as hers (eg, "Why would she write this?")--Ryback 19:18, 17 January 2008 (EST)
- I think that it's okay to leave in the Melaine Leary thing. Article looks good. Should we see if we can get her mugshot from SMI? I'll go get it now and upload it for use. --CaptainNiamhy 07:16, 18 January 2008 (EST)
It's on the front page now.--Ryback 05:42, 20 January 2008 (EST)
