Talkpage comments
From Monkey Island wiki
Here is a quick guide to leaving talkpage comments. There is a much more comprehensive guide at Wikipedia:Talk_page.
Signing comments
Comments need to be manually signed, otherwise the only way to find out who left them and when is to check the page history. Signing involves typing a series of tildes (~) after your comment. Alternatively, if you look at the toolbar above the edit screen, there should be a button to leave a signature with timestamp. There are several ways to sign:
- ~~~~ :: Leaves a signature containing your username, and the date and time of your post.
- ~~~ :: Leaves a signature just containing your username.
- ~~~~~ :: Leaves a signature just containing the date and time.
The first format is the preferred one. Note that if you are an unregistered user, any comments will be signed with your IP address, rather than your username.
Here are some examples of the above options:
Ryback 17:53, 20 December 2007 (EST)
17:53, 20 December 2007 (EST)
Remember that article contributions need not be signed as the authorship can always be verified in the page history.
Section headings
Since multiple conversations may be taking place at once on the one talk page, this can rapidly become confusing. New conversations and talk subjects should be separated using heading separators, eg (==New section==). This will make things much simpler to follow.
Indentation
There is a simple way to mark your comment as a reply to an earlier comment - leave it directly below, and preface your comment with a colon (:). The output will look like this:
I think the article needs to be trimmed down. -- Mary
- Agreed, but we should retain the first section. -- Alice
If the comment you're replying to has already been indented, use two colons to indent further, and so on.
I think the article needs to be trimmed down. -- Mary
