The Caverns of Meat (also referred to as Hell) are a disturbing location seen in the first game. Leading from the Giant Monkey Head on Monkey Island, LeChuck's ship lies at its bowels. The caverns are impossible to navigate without the use of the Cannibals' enchanted Navigator Head. Inside the caverns are very large internal organs (such as a heart and lungs) and some bones, seeming to belong to the monkey whose giant head is the entrance, and fitting the Voodoo Lady's prediction that Guybrush would find himself inside a giant monkey. At the time Guybrush entered the cave, LeChuck's ship is anchored in the cavern. Presumably because it is ghost ship, it isn't affected by the lava.
By the time of The Curse of Monkey Island LeChuck has built an amusement park with a ride, the Rollercoaster of Death, that leads into the caverns, where riders are burnt, killed, and resurrected as skeletons for LeChuck's army of the undead. Guybrush rides the coaster but Elaine has switched the tracks so he never reaches the lava. This is where he has his showdown with LeChuck.
After his return (and the possible exhaustion of the power of Big Whoop) LeChuck destroys the amusement park, causing shifting volcanic activity which seals off the caverns. In Escape from Monkey Island the Giant Monkey Head instead leads to the control room of the Giant Monkey Robot. It is also in this game that the name "Caverns of Meat" is used for the first time.
Trivia
- When the player first enters the caverns, looking at anything results in a disgusted reaction from Guybrush. However, the more the player keeps using the "look at" command, the more Guybrush's tolerance for the meaty exteriors grows until he eventually begins to give positive reactions (such as "Awesome").
- In the The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, the head of Manny Calavera is incorporated into the meat-structures of LeChuck's lair.
